Health Disparities: A Summary from Virginia’s Substance Use Prevention Efforts
We are excited to share the summary disparity document compiled by OMNI Institute and the Virginia SEOW. This document is a condensed, three-page summary of the information found in the full disparities report. It can be used as a starting point to share a common definition of health disparities and see an example of a disparity in Virginia.

In our current climate, it has become clear that data are not only helpful but critical for making life-changing decisions. From local demographic to state or national-level trends, data help us better understand our world and can help direct us in determining what actions are needed for desired change. But, data alone can only get you so far; data have to be accessible and comprehendible.
BRINGING COMMUNITY AWARENESS TO THE PREVALENCE AND IMPACTS OF ACES
As Childhood Abuse Prevention month begins, OMNI aims to bring community awareness to the prevalence and impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs encompass all types of abuse, neglect, and other potentially traumatic experiences such as violence or instability in the home that occur in childhood (under age 18). Although ACEs are experienced in childhood, they have wide-reaching effects and lasting impacts into adulthood.
